Acme Gear Co., Inc. was originally founded as Marine Boat Engines in 1929 and was subsequently renamed Acme Gear Co., Inc. in 1955 when the facilities were moved to New Jersey from Long Island City in New York City.  Its original business was focused on rebuilding marine engines including work on PT boats during World War II.  Other high profile projects include the NASA moon buggy and the waste disposal facility on the west side of New York City.  Acme Gear serves various business segments including the air compressor industry, transportation, renewable energy, printing and aerospace for major customers like Cameron (formerly Cooper Cameron), Trane a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand, and York a Johnson Controls company. 

  
Acme Gear manufactures high precision ground helical and spur gears to AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association) class 15 in sizes up to 60 inches (experience and capabilities allow Acme to manufacture gears up to 60').  Ground gears have significant advantages because of their pinpoint registration, low noise levels, longer life and high-speed operation.  Acme's compressor gears are manufactured with through-hardened, aircraft quality alloy steels, which are subjected to both destructive and non-destructive testing procedures.  Tolerances of 1/10,000 (.0001) in. are necessary.  Some specific areas require tolerances held to +/- fifty millionths (.00005) in. These levels of tolerances are required to maintain vibration-free and low-noise performance at speeds exceeding 80,000 rpm. 

Acme currently serves over 40 active major customers in a variety of industries including, automotive, air and gas compressors, aerospace, industrial machinery and equipment, motor vehicle transmissions, printing machinery, pumping equipment, power transmissions, refrigeration and heating, steam/wind turbines, and transit authorities.
